Newsflash

The new Democratic controlled Congress has recently failed at funding an expensive supplemental funding bill for troops in Iraq.  They've got to do better.  Without the right leadership on the House and Senate floor, they'll struggle for the next 2 years.  Wasting time on the floor without sufficiently funding the Department of Defense is bad business for America.

Gas and Oil Prices
Written by John
Monday, 16 July 2007
Is it just me, or have gas prices finally driven inflationary pressure on goods and services?  Walk into Wal Mart and you might notice (if you're price-conscious) a sharp increase in the price of just about everything.  A gallon of orange juice; for example, costs almost six dollars, when a year ago you'd pay somewhere around four dollars.  If you're driving around an SUV getting 10 miles per gallon, you're fueling the demand problem of incredibly high gasoline prices.  Only when demand decreases, will prices go down.  When the oil companies are sitting on their reserves, pressure will be so great the only place to go will be down.  Low gas prices are in the nation's best interest.  When gas prices are low, people tend to travel more, prices go down, etc.  The lawmakers cannot fix this and it's not in the interest of the suppliers to increase production.  So what do we do?  We decrease demand!  Buy lower energy consuming vehicles.  This will force prices down.  Until we're willing to do this as a nation, expect gas prices and consumer inflation to grow.

Freedom vs. Security
Written by John
Friday, 13 July 2007

As a country we must make a conscious decision as to how much security is enough.  We've already felt the burden of handling conter terrorism, but does the cost and focus justify the means.  When American rights of speech and privacy are infringed upon, we need to take a step back and reassess.  Benjamin Franklin; a great American, believed that with the exception of high threat targets, the cost of security might be too great.  Here are his thoughts....

"Those who calculate chances may perhaps find that not one death (or the destruction of one house) in a hundred thousand happens from that cause, and that therefore it is scarce worth while to be at any expense to guard against it. But in all countries there are particular situations of buildings more exposed than others to such accidents, and there are minds so strongly impressed with the apprehension of them, as to be very unhappy every time a little thunder is within their hearing; it may therefore be well to render this little piece of new knowledge as general and well understood as possible, since to make us safe is not all its advantage, it is some to make us easy. And as the stroke it secures us from might have chanced perhaps but once in our lives, while it may relieve us a hundred times from those painful apprehensions, the latter may possibly on the whole contribute more to the happiness of mankind than the former." -Benjamin Franklin
